The History of Hangzhou

　　Hangzhou is a city with rich historical heritage and colorful cultures, also one of the seven ancient capitals in China . The beauty lies in its charming lakes and picturesque mountains as well as in its profound history and culture. The Liangzhu Civilization created by our forefathers living here about 5000 years ago was considered the dawn of the Chinese civilization. During the period of the Five Dynasties (around 907-960 A.D), Hangzhou became the capital of the Wuyue Kingdom . During the Southern Song Dynasty, Hangzhou not only became a metropolitan city, but also one of the most prosperous metropolises in the world. After Yuan and Ming Dynasties, Hangzhou became the provincial capital of Zhejiang ; also one of the most economically developed areas in China .

　　Possessing excellent sceneries such as West Lake and Qiantang River , Hangzhou is famous as “heaven on earth”. An Italian traveler Marco Polo once remarked that the city is the most beautiful and splendid in the world. Hangzhou has rich tourist resources. There are two national beauty spots, five national forest parks, two natural reserves, one national tourist holiday zone, over eighty national and provincial and civic reserves, over one hundred tourist scenic spots.
